MoneySmart has free tools, tips and guides for people from all stages of life. The banking and budgeting tools can be helpful for managing money and everyday finances.

Services Australia is a government agency that delivers social services. The Managing Money section of their website has practical information and support to help you budget and deal with debt.


Scams and Financial Exploitation

There are many different types of scams which attempt to take your money and/or your personal information. However, there are ways to protect yourself and important signs to look for.

ScamWatch

ScamWatch is run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to help you spot and avoid scams. The website provides up-to-date information on current scams and how to spot them, and tips on how to protect yourself. It also has an online reporting tool if you’d like to report a scam.

Be Connected eSafety

The Be Connected eSafety website provides an introduction to internet safety. It has some helpful tips on internet safety, including paying safely online, avoiding scams and tricks and downloading and saving documents.

This website provides access to several short courses and guides, where you will learn that it's actually not that difficult to stay safer online - you just need to follow a few simple steps. Information on different types of scams is also available, including phishing, romance, investment, remote access and crypto scams.

The Little Black Book of Scams

The best way to protect yourself from scams is through awareness and education. The Little Black Book of Scams is a free e-book (also available in different languages and as an audiobook). It is recognised internationally as an important tool for consumers and small businesses to learn about scams including:

  • the most common scams to watch out for
  • the different ways scammers can contact you
  • the tools scammers use to trick you
  • the warning signs
  • how to protect yourself, and
  • where you can find help.

National Debt Hotline

This is a not-for-profit service operated by Financial Counselling Australia to help Australians tackle debt problems. Step-by-step guides are available via the website. You can also speak to professional financial counsellors, who offer free and confidential advice over the phone or through face-to-face counselling for more complex matters.

Start2Talk is a practical website managed by Dementia Australia, for all Australians who want to plan ahead for themselves or help somebody else plan ahead. The website has useful resources and planning tools across a range of financial, health, lifestyle and personal issues including preparation of wills, power of attorney and nomination of substitute decision makers. The resources and planning tools are tailored for each Australian State and Territory. They can be completed and stored online or else printed out and completed by hand.
